Genius

I feel it necessary to mention the book I'm reading right now. Normally any book written by Carl Sagan is worth mentioning but "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark" is a home run. Although I'm not even half way finished, the chapters I've already read are packed with information that is priceless.
If you get a chance, and you wish to educate yourself.... go get yourself a copy of The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan.
Carl Sagan is truly an amazing man who has given inspiration to many who ponder the secrets of life and beyond. A special thanks to my buddy Wandering Acrobat for enlightning me with Carl Sagan's intellect.
In a nutshell:
Carl Sagan muses on the current state of scientific thought, which offers him marvelous opportunities to entertain us with his own childhood experiences, the newspaper morgues, UFO stories, and the assorted flotsam and jetsam of pseudoscience. Along the way he debunks alien abduction, faith-healing, and channeling; refutes the arguments that science destroys spirituality, and provides a "baloney detection kit" for thinking through political, social, religious, and other issues.

In these days where Christianity interlopes into government, science and public life, Sagan, years after his death, is a beacon of rational, humanistic perspective.
He is my hero.
How strange that some people actually think that science destroys spirituality...why can't you believe in both...or is that blasphemy?
We can all beleive in anything we want, it's just that we have people who wish that everyone believed in what they do. They don't want anyone to think outside the box... and will condemm those who do.
hmm... that book sounds interesting.
The problem is that a lot of people are afraid of anything or anyone who differs from the norm. It's the same with spirituality, sexuality, politics, whatever. An independent thinker has always been an outcast. Remember, everyone thought the world was flat until they were proved wrong. The majority of people think there is safety in numbers and don't have the nerve to think for themselves. I believe they're called "sheep".
It goes without saying that people can hold spirtual beliefs in balance with scientific exploration. BUT, when a government codifies the elimination or hinders exploration based upon scriptual edicts (I am thinking here of stem research and the concept of "life begins at conception" because the lord sayeth), it becomes highly problematic.
Spirtual beliefs have no place in the realm of government or science.
I love the Pale Blue Dot picture. I always remember this when I hear Carl Sagan.
