Nothing ceases to amaze me now a days, especially when it comes to the folks that are religious. I don't know if this troubles you as much as it troubles me, but I felt the necessity of making sure you all know what's going on.
Currently there is an email that is going around telling people NOT to go and see the movie called "The Golden Compass". The main reason why people are scrambling to make this movie disappear is because the author of the books the movie was based on is a loud and proud Atheist.
Mind you, the author's (
Phillip Pullman) first volume of the trilogy, "Northern Lights", won the Carnegie Medal for children's fiction in the UK in 1995. The Amber Spyglass, the last volume, was awarded both 2001 Whitbread Prize for best children's book and the Whitbread Book of the Year prize in January 2002, the first children's book to receive that award. The series won popular acclaim in late 2003, taking third place in the BBC's Big Read poll.
Why am I bent out of shape because people are trying to prevent a harmless movie from being seen? Well, the problem that I have is that the religious fanatics have a one sided viewpoint. Why is it that the religious nuts didn't protest when the "Chronicles or Narnia" was being released? Why weren't they sending out emails telling people that movie was a super duper religious movie intended to make people believe in God? How can they advocate a movie that is trying to persuade children into a religious belief and then turn around and say that a movie with a hidden agenda (as they claim) shouldn't be seen?
Aren't religious people not supposed to be judgmental? How can anyone tell anyone else not to see a movie without even seeing it themselves? The most troubling out of all this is not the fact that the author is an Atheist but what the possible message the movie might have on children.
Phillip Pullman himself says
"But I'm not in the business of offending people. I find the books upholding certain values that I think are important. Such as that this life is immensely valuable. And that this world is an extraordinarily beautiful place, and we should do what we can to increase the amount of wisdom in the world". Is that really a bad message to send to kids? My personal belief is that kids should be taught the truth and not be told silly stories of how things begin or end. Why not let kids understand the beauty of this world, and to appreciate what we have now, because after "now" there is no "later".
I must admit that before I knew about this latest email I thought the movie was another facade for the religious people who try and push their beliefs onto everyone else. The email has only helped me in now wanting to go see the movie and understand what message they're trying to convey. If you have kids, you might want to take them to see this movie. Why? Because we shouldn't censor what our kids hear. We should treat our kids like the humans that they are and let them perhaps understand all the puzzles of life in their own way.

Here is the email that is going around:
Dear All,
There will be a new children's movie out in December called "The Golden Compass". The movie has been described as "atheism for kids" and is based on the first book of a trilogy entitled "His Dark Materials" that was written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant atheist and secular humanist who despises C. S. Lewis and the "Chronicles of Narnia". His motivation for writing this trilogy was specifically to counteract Lewis' symbolisms of Christ that are portrayed in the Narnia series.
Clearly, Pullman 's main objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that "my books are about killing God." He has even stated that he wants to "kill God in the minds of children". It has been said of Pullman that he is "the writer the atheists would be praying for, if atheists prayed."
While "The Golden Compass" movie itself may seem mild and innocent, the books are a much different story. In the trilogy, a young streetwise girl becomes enmeshed in an epic struggle to ultimately defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God. Another character, an ex-nun, describes Christianity as "a very powerful and convincing mistake." In the final book, characters representing Adam and Eve eventually kill God, who at times is called YAHWEH. Each book in the trilogy gets progressively worse regarding Pullman 's hatred of Jesus Christ.
"The Golden Compass" is set to premier on December 7, during the Christmas season (and staring Nicole Kidman), and will probably be heavily advertised. Promoters hope that unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie, that they will enjoy the movie, and that the children will want the books for Christmas.
Please consider a boycott of the movie and the books. Also, pass this information along to everyone you know (including church leaders). This will help to educate parents, so that they will know the agenda of the movie. I am sending this to those of you who have kids or friends with kids, grandkids or have influence with kids. So many things today are darkness concealed in what appears to be innocent. FYI.
Don't let kids see "The Golden Compass"Can you believe that this kind of backwards mentality still exists in our current world?
